Understanding the Relationship Between Enjoying Physical Fitness and Being Female

How often is being female associated with being interested in or enjoying physical fitness? When someone is female, is there any consistent correlation with reporting higher or lower enjoyment of physical fitness? Do people who identify as female tend to cluster in particular patterns of interest in physical fitness compared with the overall population? For instance, perhaps cultural expectations, access, and social support shape how comfortably women can express an interest in physical fitness, which could create the appearance of a stronger or weaker link in surveys and everyday observations. Or, perhaps the connection is minimal because enjoyment of physical fitness is widely distributed across genders and driven more by individual preferences than by sex. Understanding whether and how being female relates to enjoying physical fitness can be important for interpreting health research, designing inclusive fitness programs, and avoiding inaccurate stereotypes.

We've analyzed data from a study on 243 people in the the U.S., which we've used to explore these questions. Study participants were asked to what extent they agree with the statement "I am interested in or enjoy physical fitness" and also if they identify as female.
